in Action
In July 2005, eight
travelers journeyed with Culture
Xplorers into the heart of Peru
- to be among the Andean people,
participate in festivals as well
as daily life, and to inaugurate
an annual awards celebration honoring
the indigenous weaving communities
of the Sacred Valley.
1st Annual Culture Xplorers Weavers Awards
Hundreds of indigenous weavers from six communities spent three months competing for the first annual Culture Xplorers Weavers Awards. Through a
vote of their own cooperative's board, twenty-one of them were honored on July 17, 2005, each winning a share of the cash prize. The second annual
Culture Xplorers' Weavers Awards will be held in Chinchero, Peru, on June 17, 2006.
The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco
Nilda Callaņaupa founded the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco in 1996. A master weaver, she has exhibited internationally and has presented lectures on the Andean textile
tradition at Harvard University and National Geographic. Under her direction, the Center continues to reach out to new communities, preserving and promoting the ancient traditions
for future generations and the world.
Jim Kane
Jim Kane founded Culture Xplorers with a simple vision: to foster an immersive,
positive impact experience by connecting travelers and local people through a
celebration of their living culture and traditions. A regular contributor
to Transitions Abroad magazine, his work builds ongoing relationships between
travelers and indigenous communities worldwide.
