Trip Overview

The city of Cusco makes a perfect base to explore one of Peru's most exhilarating regions. The spectacular scenery and the thin air both combine to leave us a bit breathless! This trip is very active, with three days of trekking at altitude for between 2 and 5 hours per day.

  • Trekking to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail
  • participating in an 'earth offering' ceremony in a small Quechua community
  • Discovering Cusco’s colonial charms on foot
  • Villa el Salvador, a shanty-town outside of Lima, where we’ll learn of its current struggle to escape poverty against extremely difficult odds
  • A boat ride on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world
  • A visit to a weaving village accompanied by one of Peru’s foremost experts on textile traditions

  Host Family Option
You can also choose to stay for several nights with a local host family in Cusco, instead of a hotel - a perfect way to experience life through the eyes of a local!
     
  Weaving Village Visit
We’ll spend the day in a rarely visited weaving village of 120 families. After learning about their craft up close, we’ll share some food and then go for a hike in the beautiful hills which encircle it, perhaps joined by Damian, the mayor, or other villagers.
     
  Earth Offering Ceremony
We are invited to witness an earth offering ceremony in a tiny hamlet around two hours from Cusco. Jimmy, our Quechua day-leader, not only teaches us about this 1,000 year old tradition, but introduces us into the daily rhythm of life in a Quechua village.
