Trip & Day Leaders

Daniel Salazar - Peru Trip Leader
Daniel, a native of Lima, became a Carmelite priest more out of a desire to help people than any religious dogma. During part of his time with the order, Daniel lived in rural Andean communities, forging a deep connection with the people there that continues to this day. After 12 years, Daniel left and met his wife Maricarmen. They have a beautiful little boy, Mateo.

After training customer service staff and consulting for several of Peru's top hotels, Daniel decided to give trip leading his full attention. We are grateful he chose to become part of Culture Xplorers' team and our clients enthusiastically agree!

Nilda Callanuapa - Weaving Village Day Leader
Nilda has done more than anyone in the last 20 years to revive and promote the 2,000 year old Peruvian textiles tradition. She is a world-renowned expert on the subject, as well as a master weaver, and has lectured at Harvard University and National Geographic's headquarters in Washington DC.

Despite all the accolades, what impresses us most about Nilda is her genuine warmth. It is a true pleasure to spend an afternoon in her company. On the day that Nilda is our host, she takes us to one of her favorite weaving villages to introduce us to the art of Andean weaving and, just as importantly, to the people of this wonderful place.

Jimmy Aguirre - Quechua Communities Day Leader
In a special project being developed with CULTURE XPLORERS, Jimmy is trying to bring the benefits of sustainable tourism to the community where he was born, around two hours Northeast of Cusco.

His Quechua upbringing makes him a perfect liaison between our small groups and the people of his village. His easy laughter is as unforgettable as the experiences he shows us during this special day.

Manuel Canterac - Villa el Salvador Day Leader
A dignified, tireless man, Manuel is nonetheless struggling against great odds. Villa el Salvador is a shantytown often held up as a model of community organization and self-reliance. However, breakneck growth - spurred partly because of its early reputation and success - is overwhelming efforts to keep up with infrastructure and services.

Manuel is a fourteen-year resident of Villa el Salvador, as well as a teacher, a father, a community center director and founder of the local greenhouse. He will explain to our exclusive groups the tumultous history of this spawling community, then show us his neighborhood, the community center, and some other projects which rise to strengthen and beautify this place like fresh stems from his greenhouse.
