Weather and Packing

Weather - Mexico

The rainy season is from June through October. During these months, brief but heavy downpours can be expected most afternoons. The daytime temperatures will be moderate to warm (60 to 90 degrees) with temperatures dropping at night from the 40's to the 60's.

For more detailed information about Oaxaca, Mexico City, San Cristobal de las Casas and Palenque, the Weather Channel's web site is a good source.

Packing

  • Lightweight layerable clothing, including a fleece or sweater for the evenings.
  • A light and possibly water-resistant/proof jacket. Be prepared for rain from June through October.
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes with a sturdy sole.
  • A hat which protects from both sun exposure and rain is ideal.
  • Small knapsack or daypack.
  • Camera and film - available but more expensive there.
  • Money belt optional.
  • Swimsuit - for those going to Palenque, there is a waterfall (Agua Azul) in which we can swim.
  • Insect repellent (with DEET) this will be needed in Palenque, but will not be necessary during most of the trip.
  • Sun screen - the Mexican sun is strong, especially at higher elevations - use sun screen!
  • Sunglasses
  • Small alarm clock
  • Vitamins
  • Medical supplies (antiseptic, aspirin, Imodium/Lomotil, antacid)
  • A Spanish phrase book is not required, but helpful/recommended for those that want to explore more on their own.
