Travel To Brazil
Brazil is a very sensual
experience: the music, the food, the
passionate celebrations, even the
geography and climate combine to create
an atmosphere that stirs the senses.
Through
it all, the indelible fingerprint of the
famed 'mixtura fina' (fine mixture) of Portuguese,
African and Amerindian influences is present
- in fact responsible for - the rich blend
of cultures that makes Brazil such a fascinating
destination.
CULTURE XPLORERS
will concentrate on two regions of this
enormously diverse country: Salvador, the
heart and soul of Afro-Brazilian traditions,
and Rio de Janeiro, the justly famed capital
to the South.

Rocinha
Favela Walk
Rio’s favelas are little understood by outsiders. We will spend a morning
walking through Rocinha to gain a first-hand understanding of favela life. Several
neighborhood youths of all ages will join us on our walk, as they train to be
local tour guides in one of Rio’s most innovative community development
programs. |

Midnight
Market
Unlike any other market in Brazil,
Sao Cristovao’s ‘midnight
market’ is a sensory experience
that must be experienced in person.
Immigrants from Northeastern Brazil
descend on this market on the weekends
not only to shop for the spicy foods,
pungent tobacco coils, herbal medicines
and other products from their ancestral
home, but also to dance the night
away to the beat of forro music. |
